The resultant radiation killing many sea creatures in the area.
German submarines (U-Boats) attacking merchant shipping, civilian ships and navy vessels.
Along with the Navy wars of other nations sinking various kinds of ships.

It is estimated that a third of all the ships that were in the world were sunk.

With merchant ships alone, adding up to about 28% of their number being sunk.
