In the formula the alphabet positions are multiplied by 6 (from Barry R Smiths code) "A" = 1 x 6 = 6, "Z" = 26 x 6 = 156. To put it in the computer, the letter "A" has a value of 65 and it needs to be converted to the value of 1 then multiplied by 6, which sets the formula for all other values. This is done by subtraction of 64 to get it to equal 1, then multiply it by 6. Hence the numbers 6416.
